Oh, that Reade Turner. She’s got an opinion for every occasion.
Coming up-a few moments with Esther and Izzy! And Tristan and Malcolm and Sla-I mean, Jacob! Which will lead to some big doin’s.
Hang on to your horses-the merry go round may start going a little faster.
Oh, and that cute couple is from the cool comic, “Carbon Dating,” which you can find (a link to) over there on your right.
She’s got a violent streak. I approve.
Me too. She’s kind of like a grownup June…
Disclaimer: Any opinions shared between Reade Turner and the author are purely coincidental.
And you were commenting on my comic while I was commenting on yours! I didn’t even know the Internet could do that!
You approve? o_O
I think she scares me a little. At least, I’d be very careful not to get on her bad side if that’s typical of her imagination.
I approve because characters with violent streaks are a rich source of entertainment and potential slapstick awesomeness. I wouldn’t want to get on her bad side, but I wouldn’t mind watching someone else get on her bad side (popcorn, anybody)?
By the way, her pose and expression in panel one are brilliant. The third panel pose is also nice and sassy, but I can almost see her giving that bat a lil’ whirl before hitting a “dome run”.
Thank you for that. I was kind of worried that she might be too violent, but since it’s just a fantasy, well, pass the popcorn…
Also, for panel 1 I had to bring up pictures of batters and draw from real life. Something I don’t do nearly as often as I should.
Innocent VoiceThis wouldn’t happen to be based upon a bookstore owner or his daughter in Poulsbo would it?
I was typing the disclaimer as you were writing your comment. I didn’t know the Internet could do that either!
And, um, well, see, some of us Poulsbo shop owners have a running joke about how stupid the backwards flat cap looks.
Ah the internet and time differences.
I’m eight hours ahead of Seattle’s time zone sat at work, confirming (or not as the case may be) the completion of system backups.
Thank Goodness for Groovy Kinda getting me through the day.
Never heard of a flat cap being called a “Sixpence” before…..A “Doffer” or a “Whippet Rag” yes.
Yeah, Reade. Let ‘im have it. Wearing a sixpence backwards! What a tool. By the way, you wouldn’t happen to have a hatrack around here? No? Well, I’ll just hang onto this…
Wearing it backwards because you’re wearing a gas mask is okay. Or umpiring a baseball game.
But when the mask comes off, the hat turns ’round.
And I never heard them called “sixpences” before. Thank you for that.
Plus, you were right about Reade’s first appearance.
I believe the word is of British origin. It’s a symptom of a strange phenomenon, where I was taught British english in school, but American english bled into it through consumption of American popular culture. The result is a kind of bastardization of the language. I pick the part I like from each camp. 🙂
This is a new character right? Or did I already forget people?
I believe Reade was introduced on, or around this here page:
http://groovykinda.org/comic/book-cased/
Correct me if I’m incorrect.
Oh her! Now I remember.
But I like the ponytail. It gives me something to grab onto.
But yeah, backwards caps of any kind are evil.
I’m sure Reade would like to grab that ponytail too, but not in the way you’re suggesting…
HA!
Does Ms. Turner have any need for devoted slav- shelf stocker… ahem…
She may be hiring in the near future.
Though the interview process could be somewhat traumatic.
And I can’t say anything, but you just gave me the greatest idea…
Reade should talk….a grown woman wearing a school skirt? not that I’m complaining, mind.
She’s just mad about plaid.
Or just plain mad…
The answer to both is: YES!!!!!!
it’s a hat? I thought for sure that is a beret.
Personally, I find plaid to be EVIL, pure and simple from the eighth dimension!
Except for short, pleated plaid school skirts. Those are rather sexy. And kilts might be okay, I guess, for those manly enough to pull it off.
But all the rest? EVIL! (Or… at least it really hurts my eyes.)
And I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing it. Unless I was reborn as a Scott or Irish. Or if I was a kid again and HAD to wear it as part of a school uniform. Well, maybe I would for a million dollars…
But, yeah… EVIL! 😛
I find it funny, if a bit ironic, that she’s (in her mind) lecturing him about the ’60’s being over. For the most part, the fashion, architectural styles, and automobiles we see seem to have a predominantly 60’s or 70’s vibe to them. (Bell-bottoms everywhere!) Personally, I think it’d be a bit uncalled for if a guy was being criticized with “Don’t you know the 00’s are over with” for a hair style that might be 10 years old. Her bookstore doesn’t exactly scream ‘modern’ or ‘fashionable’, either. If anything, it seems a bit retro – antique, even.
Anyway, Reade’s fashion sense screams “beatnik” to me.
I’m afraid we’ll have to agree to disagree on plaid. I have a number of plaid wool shirts that I love.
I even have an old 60’s plaid Pendleton jacket, and when I put it on over a plaid shirt all my loved ones yell at me.
I do agree with you on the short pleated plaid school skirts. Some things are timeless classics.
And the 70s fashion vibe is deliberate. I rather like some of the fashions that others scorn with snorts of derision, ridicule, and disdain.
But even though they might dress like it’s the 70s, it still is 1996 in the GK world.
And beatnik? Not compared to these two.
It screams something all right. Just not beatnik.
I think her husband left cause she wears plaid EVERYWARE, not just
shirt.
More I will not add. . . .
cause I could be WRONG. hahahahahahahaha
Sorry, I cannot spell today.
it should be SKIRT.
I just have to ask. Is it me or is there anyone else here who looking at the ancient Hippie that gets clue-batted (Literally!) and said to themselves “Damn! It’s George Carlin!!” Just curious.
YES!
Any resemblance to persons living or dead is purely coincidental.
Especially George Carlin. I loved his stuff. And I think he would’ve felt the same way Reade does about this.
I was modeling our fashion victim on some of the rich boaters we see here in Poulsbo. Though I do admit there are similarities.
After seeing this, I think Reade and Eleanor have much more in common than we think.
This could be a previously unknown connection that no one else knows.
Oh, you’ll be seeing some Reade/Eleanor interactions coming up in a few strips.
I’ll just say that Reade-oh heck, I don’t want to spoil it. You’ll see.
The horrible thing about an archive binge, well, ONE of the horrible things, is that the memories are a little bit clearer… i.e., her little skirt rather horribly reminds me of something Toivo offered Edison to replace the dress he ran through the dryer. She was rather abrupt in rejecting it once she realized what it was…
Incidentally, the worst thing about an archive binge is how quickly it’s over. 🙁
It wasn’t so much the skirt as the mental picture of Toivo wearing it. Oh god, now it’s in my head…
And I’ll keep making them as fast as I can. Plus, I’ll go find some older strips to post.
At first I thought it was just a beret, but then I realized it was one of those caps that look like someone took a baseball cap and stapled the top to the bill. Is it the same as those “newspaper boy” caps?
Yes. Exactly. Except that when it looks ridiculous when worn backwards.
A gentleman walked past the store the other day with a cap on backwards. Wearing glasses.
In the rain.
