My goodness. What could’ve made Nelson react like that?
And what is Reade gonna do about Eleanor? Will Nelson have a solution? Is there a solution? This is Eleanor we’re talking about.
The answers to these and many other questions are coming up! Not all at once, mind you, but eventually. You’ll just have to stick around to find out what they are!
Oh, and that handsome fella on the truck? That’s Bad Bat, a very goofy character from the absolutely zany webcomic: Tails of Lanschilandia. Think 1920’s Fleischer Studios cartoons, only with more Monty Python references.
Nelson………Wake up and smell the coffee!
Reade’s almost offering herself up on a plate.
Sheesh, some guys!
Yeah. Why is he acting that way?
Now that Reade has told Nelson what she wants, will Nelson tell Reade what HE wants? Will he want a drink? Or will he settle for a handshake?
What does Eleanor want from Reade? Is it what Reade wants from Eleanor? And if it is, will Eleanor read it in Reade’s eyes?
Now that Larry’s all wet, does he want to get rid of Robespierre? What does Robespierre want – other than more ice cream? And will Stephanie get what SHE wants from Larry AND Edison?
These questions and many others will be answered in the next episode of…Groovy, Kinda!
(with apologies to Rod Roddy, Susan Harris, et al)
Ack! More questions to be answered!
I’ve been watching a lot of Soap. Sorry about that. 🙂
…and what about Naomi?
I always liked Fargo North, Decoder.
“Eleanor wants me” must be a secret phrase used for scoring a date. Reade is certainly using all her…ahem, assets to get what she wants. Will Nelson realize she’s flirting though?
“Eleanor wants me” is also a code for “I’m in a heap of trouble.”
She’s referring to this little incident.
Here’s something to ponder: Does Nelson already know she’s flirting? He can’t be immune to her, ah, “charms.”
Perhaps he’s not interested? But why not?
There but 4 possibilities:
1. He is DEAD, but does not know it.
2. He is NOT dead but is gay.
3. He has another woman in his life, but Reade does not know that.
4. He is Legally BLIND.
Funny you should mention #4. Originally Nelson had a girlfriend, Agnes. You can see her here.
And that’s probably why they’re not together in the current strip.
All your possibilities are great.
But you missed one.
Nelson is well aware of what Eleanor can do, and will do, although what he’s thinking at this point is anyone’s guess.
Since he’s looking at the book instead of more, ah inviting scenery, It lends weight to the “not seriously flirting” argument.
And, while it seems strange, he may not be interested in Reade in the first place. It’s easy to miss even a blatant hint, if you’re not looking for one.
Excellent observations.
Another possiblity: Remember Larry and Anya’s cleavage? Nelson could be acting like a gentleman.
He could be forcing himself not to stare.
Which would probably make him even more attractive.
I don’t know why, but I find it kind of funny that she feels the need to pull her collar closed at the mention of Eleanor. Self-preserving reflex, perhaps?
Well, that, and she’s buttoning up.
Well, she came out more confident than she went in. Still strange to see her flustered after the way she was introduced. I guess the mere mention of Eleanor’s name will do that to most people who know her.
I was worried that readers might think it was out of character for Reade to be so flustered.
But with all the rewrites I kept coming back to this.
She’s got a heart, and it’s been broken before, so she’s a little insecure about all this.
Nelson snapping at her didn’t help. Originally I had him looking angrier. But that didn’t feel right.
Every time you make me wonder about something, I end up doing another (partial) archive crawl. I spend a ridiculous amount of my time being hugely entertained by your web-comic, dammit.
Here’s a quote from you from early 2013: “she wouldn’t give up her independence for anyone, not even Nelson, who is probably the only person she really loves.” regarding Eleanor. But you don’t mention how Nelson feels about her. Though you did tell us that he had lots of trouble when Eleanor used to make Anya wear … well, various clothes. 😉
So – Reade has a crush on Nelson, I think. At least a little one. His response to her direct come-on was enough to cause her to back-peddle rather abruptly. Buttoning up the blouse was nice and subtle.
Why is Nelson looking for a book on the Father of History? And what is the book that Eleanor asked Reade to find for her? “All the earlier printings were burned.” Hmmm. Sounds like a sex book 😛 What does Eleanor “know” about Reade that isn’t slowing her down? That she doesn’t swing that way, but used to?
So many questions.
And I’ve forgotten who Malcolm is.
Hmm…much good food for thought.
I’m glad you’re doing an archive crawl. I go back into the stacks quite often to keep myself up on the story. Sometimes I forget stuff too!
Let’s start with the easy one: Malcom is Jacob and Esther’s friend. He has a crush on Esther. Eleanor sent him to camp with the rest of the kids as a nice gesture (she can be generous when she wants).
If you want a better idea of Nelson’s feelings, check out “The Importance of Being Eleanor.”
Yeah, Reade has a crush. And I wanted to work the buttoning up in somehow. I was going to have Nelson say it, but there was no place.
Show, don’t tell.
As far as Herodotus goes… originally Nelson was going to be looking for a book, but he wouldn’t know the title or author (just like most people who come into the bookstore and library). It just didn’t work. So I needed him to want a specific book.
I could’ve made up a book, but I recently got the new translation of “The Histories,” so it was on my mind.
And the book Eleanor is looking for? Well, it might have something to do with her future plans…
And you’re just a few strips away from finding out what Eleanor (and Nelson) “know” about Ms Turner.
Ooh, it’s Bad Bat! Wish I had seen this earlier! Haha, thanks for drawing him, looks great! Honoured to receive a cameo here. 🙂 (I wish I could say more on the rest of the comic right now, but I guess I have way over 300 archive pages to go before this will make sense to me. :s I really like your art, though!)
Hey Tammy! I’m so glad you liked the cameo.
It’s a lot of fun to draw characters from strips I really like. Plus, it’s a chance for everyone to discover new comics.
We’re honored to have you here!
