Oh, that Reade. What an imagination.
Looks like Nelson tends to get caught up in her fantasies too.
There are worse things to base a relationship on. Ah, if only Nelson felt that way.
Wonder why he doesn’t? Well, you’ll find out soon!

Oh Man, what a brilliant panel set.
“Reality calling line Two!….Excellent
I must confess- that was a last minute line re-write.
Figures a librarian would have an active imagination.
That panel of Eleanor blithely rampaging through a battlefield while casually toting a tank and a train really kind of sums up her personality perfectly. I don’t know why or how, but it does.
Funny story: I had drawn that panel with Nelson and Reade much bigger. Eleanor was in the background in a very Godzilla inspired, nightime, smoke filled, searchlight lit panel. Inspired in no small part by this amazing page.
But the more I thought about it, the more it didn’t feel right. So, I erased the whole stupid panel, and spent over an hour just getting Eleanor right.
I’m glad it worked so well.
I knew I had seen the owner of that silhouette in the restaurant somewhere before.
Funny; “blithely” is exactly the word that came to me as well…
This is one of the most visually striking pages I’ve seen you do. Real top notch stuff. Love the blending of real and imaginary, and the “Attack of the 50ft Woman” with a summer dress imagery is fantastic. You’re a master, Charlie.
But what is that shadow on panel 4? Hmmm…
The shadow is supposed to be soldiers for the firing squad. There was a third one on the left, but then I thought: “Well, at least one of them has to be Eleanor,” and so I took him out.
Eleanor is carrying a train because both King Kong and Godzilla picked up trains. The tank (a Maus) was just fun, as were the jets.
A Maus?
Which is the largest Tank the German’s ever tried to Build? (only managed to get 6 done but not operational……..Yeah I’m a Wargamer as well)
That’s a bit of a Handful…….BIG ELEANOR = SCARY
I love the Maus. There’s one in the background of the first Captain America movie.
But the coolest thing is this episode of the anime Girls und Panzer.
“…life is built on disappointments.”?
Boy, Nelson REALLY doesn’t want to go out with her; can’t wait to find out why…
Oops, didn’t mean to post anonymously…
Aw, I knew it was you all along.
Nelson has had some disappointments in love. Especially with Eleanor.
You’ll understand more if you read “The Importance of Being Eleanor.”
I did read it a while back; time for a refresher…
Ahhh, so the tumor was a hint at a LARGER radioactive mutation! 😛
Much larger. At least in Reade and Nelson’s mind.
Charlie, I think this is one of my favorite pages of yours. Not only are the fantasy visuals striking, but really say so much about the characters, including the power Eleanor has over all of them. And it also adds a playful tone to Reade’s flirting. Just beautiful!
Thanks mj! I don’t know why I went with a firing squad. It just came to me when I was writing the strip, so I kept it in.
I didn’t want Eleanor to appear to threatening, so I gave her a flower and a box of chocolates.
And little heart-shaped buttons. Love ’em.
Dagnabbit! Focus, Reade, foc–oh, wait…..
“Gallon O’ Gravy”?
It says “Extra Chunky” on the side, but most of the letters are obscured.
Reade is very focused…she just adds a lot of local color along the way.
50 foot Eleanor, hum, as I see it half of the population is running away and the other half is running toward her with cameras.
On the firing squad, Eleanor shoots the flower and the candy bullets. yick.
Finally, Eleanor does want Reade. Just not what Reade thinks for.
Going way, way, way. (did I say way) out on left field, Eleanor want Reade to look for Victoria, wherever she went, and find out if Victoria is. Thus, if Victoria is and Reade ‘joins’ her that will help Eleanor out.
Or, Eleanor is looking for a place for her ward while she is undergoing treatment.
You’re not terribly off the mark. I will say that the book Eleanor wants Reade to find does have something to do with Victoria.
thank yew.
