I’m not sure how I feel about this one.
Yes, Edison is worried about Larry seeing Victoria again. And yes, trying to explain what happened to someone who doesn’t know would sound like she was crazy.
But I don’t think she would go so far as to whittle a stake. And that, I think, is why I had so much trouble drawing this comic. I think that, on some level, I didn’t believe this, and it kept me from drawing her.
But, I did finally manage to draw the strip, so I thought I’d post it. What do you think? Would Edison go that far?
UPDATE: And I want your opinion on this as well! Groovy, Kinda is also on Tapastic. I’ve formatted the comic differently over there. It’s in a scrolling format, which is easier for electronic devices.
Check it out and let me know what you think. Plus, while you’re there, please hit the “Like” button. Thank you.
I like it, but I don’t think I’ll do it over here. I like the old fashioned “comic strip” look too much.
Things will get very serious soon. But not next time. Next time will be silly.
I don’t think that’s a face we’ve seen on Edison before. It’s like one of Reade’ reality replacement interludes.
The American Association of Woodturners strongly recommends NOT mixing alcohol and whittling.
Edison knows Victoria’s Secret?
……….And exactly how far would you go to protect someone you love?
My family, My friends…No line I wouldn’t cross.
The Tepes Society for Vampire Hunting Skills Preservation highly approves of Edison’s carving technique. Seriously, look at piece of ash!
Aww, you can’t stay mad at Eleanor. She won’t let you, stake or no stake.
OOOOHHH! I like this Edison. She is still Doomed but I like her . . . Determination to fix a potential problem.
Eleanor would approve, afterward.
Eleanor would approve of her determination and her willingness to make something like that.
She’d take it away from her immediately, of course.
I like to think she is only carving that stake metaphorically…
Edison still has that black eye? Wait, perhaps it’s just a shadow.
Of COURSE Edison would *Ahem* “stake out” a position. It’s funnier that way. Now actually using it on Victoria, I doubt that very much.
She’s only had the black eye for a few days now.
This is-believe it or not-Tuesday of Week Three in the Groovy, Kinda universe.
And yes, she might make a stake, but using it would be a mis-take.
Wait, since NEW UNDERWEAR? O.o
You had nothing to worry about, Charlie. I think this shows Edison’s emotions perfectly. On the one hand, she trusts Larry and loves him, and knows that they will be okay. But on the other, it’s natural to feel insecure when your lover’s past love comes around.
And I’m not gonna lie, I love her expression, and the stake, in that last panel!
I think the stake works well as a visual joke. Only if you bring it up later will it become an issue, I think. A bit of heightened reality never hurt anyone.
I just don’t want it to be a case of sacrificing character for a gag.
I like to think of Groovy, Kinda as more of a character driven story than plot driven.
I don’t think you sacrifice character. You’ve established her character over hundreds of pages. Unless you make this into a regular occurence, this will be nothing but a humorous aside.
So… This means Eleanor pushed Victoria through the portal because she became a vampire and wanted to achieve some world domination evil goal? And now, if we can take that flash-foward strips from some months ago for granted, Eleanor now wants to be “embraced” (yes, I used to play “Vampire: the Masquerade” a lot) to escape from her cancer?
By the way, Mr. Charlie, is there any way you could put for sale your old works in PDF/CBR/CBZ format for us who can’t afford buying a print copy? Reading them could help enjoying this story even more.
You raise some excellent points.
We know Eleanor becomes a vampire eventually. We assume that it’s because Victoria is one, and that that’s why Eleanor pushed her through the discombobulationotron. Maybe.
Edison, Larry, and everyone else figure that Victoria’s a vampire (or a cyborg, or has cloning technology) and will return to make Eleanor immortal. They’re all leaning towards the vampire option. But they don’t know.
And nobody but Eleanor knows if she’s doing this to cure her brain tumor, or if the tumor is just an excuse to get Larry and Stephanie to finish faster.
Only time will tell…
By the way, I love the term “embraced” for becoming a vampire.
And putting “The Adventures of Lyssa and the Pirates” on PDF would be wonderful!
Since the comic was printed so long ago, I’d have to scan every single page and upload them. I could do it-I still have all my original art-but it would take time (which I don’t have much of) or money (which I have even less of).
I’d love to do it. I could post the pages over on Tapastic one at a time to build readership. Right now I’m going into the crazy times with my bookstore, so maybe starting in January I’ll get scanning.
HOW do we know Eleanor becomes a vampire eventually? I’ve read The Importance of Being Eleanor, and I’ve read the Groovy, Kinda archive from the beginning to here, and there’s nothing about that.
Now, there was a place where it seemed like you skipped a page or two, where suddenly you were talking about having retired and then returned, and that’s about when I first saw people mentioning vampires. You also said something about an “Epilog” that I have not seen. Did you post some sort of “this is what happens to everybody eventually” story and then remove it??
Man, when Edison means business, she means business. It’s kind of scary how good she is with a knife even when she’s three bubbles drunk.
She was probably two bubbles drunk when she started. And remember, she’s a former Den Mother, so she knows her way around a Scout knife.
She’s unlikely to have earned, or at least kept, a Totin’ Chip Card. Therefore, she’d not be allowed to handle a Scout knife.
Ah, the Totin’ Chip card! Thanks for reminding me of that part of my childhood.
Nelson would’ve been in danger of losing his every time he went camping.
Charlie, you’ve hit this one exactly. Of course Edison would stake her claim to Larry, and the drink helps her to think things out … her way. I endorse the idea of putting GK on paper, would love to have it on the shelves. Think about a Kickstarter whip round, you could pay for the scanning and printing then. I’m in for copies, anyone else?
He-hee-stake her claim. I wondered when someone would use that.
I’d love to do a book-or two, with 400+ strips. I’d have to figure out the formatting, since the strips are two different sizes.
Maybe next year I’ll have time to put something together. I already have some Kickstarter rewards: Robespierre stuffies, mug rugs, and cup holders.
