Oh that Eleanor.
Well, at least she’s honest. Among other things.
Hey, the amazingly talented melaredblu has outdone everyone with a cameo cluster that you’ve got to see to believe. And you’ll never guess who’s wandered over from Groovy, Kinda. Really, you’ll never guess. You’ll just have to go here to see.
Thank you melaredblu. That is so great.
UPDATE: We were talking about The Monkees in the comments. I saw them when they played the Puyallup Fair back in’ 87 or ’88.
So, many years later I ran across a Monkees picture disc that looked kind of familiar. Sure enough, it was from that concert.
It’s not very clear, I know. If I can ever find my copy, I’ll make a better scan.
Oh! How menacing! Eleanor always makes my hairs stand up!
The shading on this page is just beautiful. How you do hatching and make it so wonderfully even and consistent just floors me. That and the faces–all of them have such wonderful form and shape, really popping off the page.
Thank you, mj. Shading that last panel scared me to death. I’m really happy with how it turned out.
Reade is so much fun to draw. She’s so unique, that it’s actually really easy to get a good expression.
Nelson is the really hard one. His face is pretty average, and I’m still not as good at drawing beards as I was 20 years ago.
From a writer’s standpoint as applied to characters, that’s definitely true…
Is that……Eleanor’s……LIMO?
Well, it’s her car. It’s based on the Monkeemobile. You would’ve seen more of it, but I wanted to put a figure in the foreground.
How sad that i recognized the Monkeemobile from its blower…or rather a complimet to your illustrative chops, Charlie.
If by “Sad,” you mean “great,” then I agree.
I saw the real Monkeemobile back when the show was running. It was part of a promotion a local car dealer was doing in Detroit.
Eleanor hasn’t given Reade any reason in particular to love her, either, and I daresay flaunting her former relationship with Nelson isn’t going to endear her to Eleanor all that much.
I absolutely agree. I honestly feel like in spite of Eleanor’s clear seductive powers, her behavior may actually cause her quest for pleasure to backfire. Unless punishment is the goal.
I love your complicated people, even when I detest them.
Thank you!
She’s not doing herself any favors here. But, she does want to be honest.
If Eleanor has a flaw, it would be hubris.
She would disagree, of course.
I’m thinking that Nelson is, as yet, unaware of the doctor’s findings. It’s always hard to guess the passage of time in a comic, but …
Eleanor seems to be making some cryptic statements that would make a lot more sense to someone who knows she’s faced with a real deadline. (Not a pun – sorry) I’m assuming that Nelson is one of the “pieces” Reade will be able to pick up … after.
Side note – I saw the Monkees live once, when I was a young teenage girl. I REALLY tried hard not to “squee” but damn, it was difficult. I fell in love with Peter because he was the only one of the four to turn and sing to the “nosebleed” seats behind the stage that my Teen Club had tickets for. 🙂 I still enjoy their music.
Nelson doesn’t know about Eleanor’s condition yet. Remember, she was on her way to collect him so she could tell everyone at once. I know, that was a loooong time ago in real time…
Eleanor means that, since Nelson still carries a torch for her (see: “Importance of Being Eleanor”) that making love will just break his heart all over again.
That’s so cool that you saw The Monkees in concert! I saw them back in 1987? ’86? It was the most fun I’d ever had at a concert (and I’ve seen some big acts). They were a riot.
Plus, I finally figured out all the words to “Goin’ Down.” Yes, I’m a huge Monkees fan. You can see the influence all over Groovy, Kinda.
Ahh, the Monkees, I saw most of them during a free USO concert here at Ft. Bliss. It was good, but just not the same without Peter. The most ironic thing about them is: they could not do the same type of show today. Not at all PC.
Eleanor just dropped a big hint to Nelson.
To summarize: Besides Eleanor and Her Doctor, only 3 people know about her condition. It will be interesting to everyone’s reaction to the news.
Sorry, I mean to have said was: when I saw them, I was disappointed not to see Michael with the group, Pete was there. They were still good.
When I saw them in 87/88, Mike wasn’t touring with them. Still, as you say, they were good.
I occasionally do an impersonation of Mickey saying “Don’t do that.”
“I wish I had a glass of water.”
“Why, you thirsty?”
“No, I wanna see if my neck leaks.”
Ronnie: “I am going to call the police!”
Mickey: “You do, and I’ll be sorry!”
There’s something about a character that can so easily worm her way under the skin of others. Well, maybe not easily, but seemingly so. And it’s interesting to see how your different characters react differently (or eerily similar) to her advances.
Nelson’s ready and willing (as always), but Reade’s not so sure. And Elenaor’s honesty isn’t helping her case any.
Still, we’ll just have to see what happens.
