Wait, what? Edison, what are you thinking? You know, ever since she stopped drinking, she’s been a different person.
Oh sure, I mean, she and Rad do have a bit of history together. After all, she was his wife’s friend and rehab buddy. Chances are good that she and he, well, you know.
But still.
Anyway, I’m trying a new thing here. Since I’ve been working on my Dick Tracy Minit Mystery (which starts April 12!), I’ve had the idea to try Groovy, Kinda in a newspaper strip format. With any luck, I’ll be able to post twice a week. Do let me know what you think.
I’m wllling to let you have a shot at it wthout whining about it, and while the concept of two updates a week is sorely tempting, I’m thinjking that you’ll find the format constricting. You might not have room for a lot of the things you add to a page which satisfy an inner creative itch of yours (and amuse your discerning fans), such as signs, Robie, sight gags, Robie, side comments, Robie, the occasional chicken, and Robie. which might fall to the more business-like style of the newspaper strip.
I think you should try it, at least for a while since if anyone could make it work, it’s you. After all, you did manage to work in some cameos…… 🙂
If you like it, keep it, but if you don’t, you can always go back.
I think you’re absolutely right, D-v and Chris. I’m finding this format too constricting for Groovy, Kinda. I’ll try a few more strips while I focus on finishing Dick Tracy. If I find that I can put all those Robie things back Robie in, and do more weekly updates, I might Robie stick with it.
But hey, this is how we learn, right? Gotta try new Robie things every now and again.
I’ll go with Delta-v.Chris
The old format is bigger and, somehow, more eye-popping. I imagine you’ll still stuff everything into the wrapper you always have, I’ll just need to squint more.
Well, Pops, I’ll do what I can. You’re right about the format. I read a lot of the great newspaper comics from the 50s-60s, Mary Perkins on Stage, The Heart of Juliet Jones, Dick Tracy, etc. and I’m constantly amazed at how much they fit in a strip.
Of course, when you see the size of their originals it makes sense.
Perhaps I’ll try larger originals. We’ll just have to see!
On a different topic, I didn’t read much Dick Tracy as a kid, but some. I didn’t recognize the tagged names Honeymoon Tracy or Ugly Christine, so I did a little research; so…. isn’t that Ugly Crystal, Ugly Chrisine’s daughter?
Yes. I think Mike created Crystal. She’s buddies with Honeymoon (who was born in space in the 60s) and Little Orphan Annie, who appears from time to time in the Tracyverse.
Are you following the current storyline? Don’t you just love how Joe Staton draws our Edison Lighthouse?
Charlie, I gotta confess, if you weren’t involved I wouldn’t give the Tracy strip the time it takes to read. Just not my cuppa. I do think the Little Orphan Annie and Brenda Starr crossovers are sort of weirdly appropriate. And Staton’s drawings of Edison in a nightie have their appeal, but her face is all wrong. Yours is the only Edison for me!
Well, to be fair, Mike is doing a fairly silly thread in an otherwise serious storyline. I understand if it’s not your bag (as the young people say).
Annie’s been in a number of Dick Tracy strips. My favorite involved a crossover with the Spirit. Can’t wait to see what they do with Brenda Starr.
Thank you for your kind words on Edison! She’ll be showing up again very soon!
Checking in, Charlie. You and yours okay during the federally-mandated Stay-cation?
Oh, I’m doing fine, thanks. Heck, I’m behind on Dick Tracy, so all my spare time is spent drawing in isolation anyway. Fortunately, Team Tracy is very patient, understanding, and helpful. My local art supply store is still open. Though I am jonesin’ for a used bookstore visit.
New GK strip coming soon, by the way.
How’re you doing?
I’m down for seeing three-panel strips in GK. You’re able to deliver the punchline well enough, but for sure some pages are better off with a longer delivery. I guess the idea is kinda like how they save the long strip for the Sunday paper, except in your case, you don’t need to restrict it to Sundays, but rather when it’s most fitting.
