Yeah, he’s not the sharpest bulb in the bushel when it comes to things like this.
In his defense, he doesn’t have a lot of experience with women liking him as more than a friend.
Men suddenly going from extended social invisibility to being the potential center of a love-polygon is just one of those things that happens a lot in fiction precisely because it is exceedingly distant from reality. And while plenty fantasize it, the main problem is that there is rarely any feasible reason nor justification for it (which is also precisely why it doesn’t happen in reality).

It’s a clown drowning in pudding! Hahaha! I was watching Aqua Teen and Meetwad and Shake were watching this show. It was a clown singing about manners. It went something like this:
“Do you want some pudding?”
“Please!”
“What do you say?”
“Thank you!”
“Are you a good girl?”
“Yes, sir!”
“Are you a bad girl?”
“No, sir!”
Naturally Meetwad and Shake sang along. It was actually rather creepy….
