Just because Edison feels guilty about her former famuily doesn’t mean that she needs to be punished…(Leave that to Someone else 😉 )

What!?! Where did she get that. (several re-readings later). Oh, wow, that is sneaky. Bad Eleanor, no cookie for you.
I am speechless. I have no speech. I know I said I wanted to wait until chapter 2, but much like when the soviets sneaked R-12 missiles into Cuba, this cannot, and will not stand unanswered. In the mean time, I’ll find a quiet corner to sit and smile in. And bite my nails until friday.
Now now, don’t go rushing headlong into anything. There just might be another cameo or two coming up sometime soon…

I completely missed that on the first read. (Though, I thought the host’s menu description was… very odd.)
Edison’s guilt must be making her hear things.
Either that, or that shifty-looking waiter has been put up to it.

It did come out of nowhere. At least to Larry and Edison. Somebody else knew it was coming.

edison, hush, that’s not at all what’s on his mind. give him a chance to speak. i once had a girl say i didn’t have to marry her, she was wrong. that was the thing i most wanted to do in the world, and i did it, and have never regretted it. trust larry edison.
Okay, here goes . . .
Anya wants a romantic relationship with Larry, but Larry is uncooperative. So she seduces Edison. Much to her dismay, Larry doesn’t mind (much) and Edison becomes her good friend! When Anya threatened to reveal Edison’s hidden past as Rosemary Pipkin, Eleanor wacked her butt (HARD) and swore her to secrecy.
Eleanor considers Larry a good friend. In fact Eleanor brought Larry and Edison together and is doing her best to protect their romantic interest in each other.
Eleanor refuses to reveal Edison’s past. “ . . . The longer it takes you (Larry) to find out . . . the smaller the number of people who will get hurt.”
Larry loves Edison and respects her privacy. “I saw the picture, in the hallway. If you don’t wanna talk about it, that’s okay. I just, you know . . . I’m here. I’m here for a long time . . . if that’s what you need.”
“Thank yoo.”
Larry trusts Edison. But trust is difficult for someone who’s been abused (withholding love is on the list). They expect to be disappointed by anyone who tries to get close. In my case, the best I could do was to just be there . . . like Larry is for Edison.
‘Flight Response’ is an appropriate title. Eleanor wants Edison give up her past to Larry . . . one on one. They’re trapped on a Zeppelin, with nowhere to hide. She can only jump . . . and trust Larry will catch her.

That’s a lot of food for thought. A bit of a challenge to follow, even, but a very interesting breakdown of the story and interpretation of motives.
One thing that honestly surprised me:

I remember that line and it now makes sense that she’s talking about Edison. But, at the time, I thought Eleanor was talking about Stephanie’s past. (The reason they were visiting Eleanor was to ask about Stephanie’s past.) Maybe I need to reread a whole chapter?
Eleanor was talking about Stephanie at the time. Remember, Stephanie did say she wouldn’t hurt anyone ever again. She promised.
Thanks. The conversation takes a strange turn on page 167, when Eleanor attempts to deflect the conversation away from Stephanie.
“Do tell us everything about this . . . Edison, isn’t it?”
“Uh huh. You first.”
Larry ignored Eleanor and stayed on subject (Stephanie). This explains panel four on page 226. I still believe Eleanor has the lovers’ best interests in mind. I’ve been waiting patiently for Edison to confront her past . . . for Larry (and herself).
Good grief! I feel like I’m in a Lit class.
