Oh dear. This isn’t going the way thatĀ either of them hoped it would.
Well, if Edison leaves, they can always try again in a few years, right? Dilbert should be a little more grown-up by then.
But I don’t think that’s what either of them want. We’ll just have to wait ’till Monday to see.
Dilbert looks pretty shocked in that last panel. I wonder if he expected her to put up more of a fight.
By the way, is she calling him “dear” with a slur, or is her nickname for him actually “li’l deer”? I kind of like that as a nickname–it’s cute and original.
See Charlie’s comments in the previous strip…
“Li’l Deer” is the nickname that Dragonsreach came up with. As in “I’m here, Li’l Deer.” I really like it too, so now it’s canonical.
And yes, Dilbert is shocked. I don’t know what he expected.
But he’s still in shock from seeing her. And he’s young. So, he’s not thinking as clearly as he could.
I don’t think there’s any winning here. Sadly, I completely understand where Edison is coming from. She thought she was ready to face things, but it seems like Edison is aware that she needs to tend to herself before she can open herself up to her son again. Dealing with judgement isn’t beneficial to either, but as such is life and Dilbert is justified in his emotions.
Nope, Edison may be “lit up” but she’s competent enough to realize that this isn’t the way either one of them wants the meeting to be. She’s sensible enough to realise that if she goes to leave Dilbert has a cause to step back and “man up” and ask her to stay……………….
Or at least that’s what I hope.
Oh, come on! She’s gonna emotionally blackmail him like that? She’s the stronger party here. She’s the mother, she’s the adult. Pulling this move, and putting it on him to make a peace offering is way beneath her, and quite frankly distasteful.
Suck up your pride, let your son vent, and try again when you’re sober. That’s my viewpoint.
I think Dilbert is the one resorting to emotional blackmail.
Edison is being true to herself, which is why she left in the first place.
Larry loves her unconditionally; Dilbert has yet to understand what that means, but good for Edison for not giving in…
But they’re not equal. Dilbert is a child, Edison is an adult. If being true to herself means not being able to stay sober for 5 minutes to see her son again, she should never have shown up in the first place. She didn’t fall into a vat of whiskey, she sat down and got hammered on her way to see him. She knew what would happen, but she did it anyway. And I don’t blame him for a second for being hurt and angry with her.
But Edison didn’t plan to see Dilbert this evening. If she hadn’t run into Alice, she would’ve gone back to her bungalow, gotten drunk, and slept in.
She was planning to be at “two bubbles” when she saw Dilbert, either tomorrow or later in the week.
She even mentioned that they couldn’t see the kids until tomorrow here.
On the one hand, Dilbert just told her that he doesn’t want her in his life.
On the other hand, she’s definitely overreacting to Dilbert’s “…it’ll soften the disappointment” line.
On the other hand, he’s 17, he’s in shock, and he’s very angry.
The last lines were going to be Edison saying: “Yoo’re very good,” and Dilbert replying: “Two years of daily practice.”
Either way, it’s a bad situation. They’re both overreacting and saying things they don’t really mean.
But she had to know it was a chance of running into him. And if she couldn’t stay sober for a day or two, if she couldn’t make that effort for her son, then why even show up.
You know I love Edison, but I put the fault in this situation squarely on her.
I don’t think it’s anyone’s fault. It’s more an unfortunate accident.
I agree that the responsibility is on Edison’s shoulders. She is the adult here.
Now, is she serious? Or is she calling Dilbert’s bluff? Does she even know what she’s doing?
And what will Dilbert do? Say “fine,” and walk away?
I think the most important question here is: Will melaredblu be a sad panda or a happy panda with the next strip?
If only kids didn’t go out to restaurants, then they wouldn’t have bumped into each other like this! I can understand Dilbert, though. His mom became a drunk and left him, and when she shows up again she’s still drinking. As a kid, you always want to see the best in your parents, but when they disappoint you time and time again, it’s devastating. But I also feel bad for Edison too. She wanted so badly for this work out.
Dilbert is now suddenly learning about the price of making adult judgments. I imagine it’s hitting him rather hard, too. Let’s hope this gets itself worked out soon! Emotional scortched earth is fun for nobody.
May be Dilbert named the ship for another Edison. Not his mom.
