Nelson………….Tact and Diplomacy Badge Failed
…the kids are adopted, then? There’s a definite resemblance… a relative?
You know, Stephanie wondered the same thing.
She snuck into Boy Scouts? Cool!
Nah….Scouts allow Girls the Ventures units in the UK.
Headache causing……….Hell yes, for former leaders like me.
That’s a different organization than Girl Guides, then? Interesting. Reade appears to be masquerading as a boy, in any case.
I don’t think it was a masquerade. THIS is the “does she know?” secret!
Let’s call it an inadvertent masquerade.
Venture crews can be co-ed here in the states too. But since he thought she was a boy, I was figuring that wasn’t the case and that she had snuck into Boy Scouts or something 🙂
Whoa, wait, so was Reade a boy and now is a girl? Or was she just a real awkward girl who everyone thought was a boy but then put on a skirt?
Numba #2 is the winner. She has a short temper.
Nelson was wrong. ‘Not much to see up stairs but down – Disneyland.’
Considering Reade was holding both a chunk of wood and a knife, I’d say Nelson was lucky to get off with just a fractured skull…
When making a point, Reade tends to favor blunt objects.
The look on her face in panel #4; Nelson has absolutely crushed her…
So is that why she wears such hyper-feminine Micro-minis? Compensation for the emotional scarring?
Naw. It’s because she likes to show off her stately gams.
Not only does gams mean legs, but it can also mean a large set of teeth.
Great reveal, Charlie. And heartbreaking. I can’t wait to find out how the kids came into the picture. And who exactly did he hit with that axe?
I don’t think he hit anyone, I think he just came VERY close to hitting someone.
Nelson may be a screwball, but he was a serious Scout. And Scouts don’t throw axes at people.
Near people, maybe…
Heartbreaking and skullfracturing!
Funny story- I got a skull fracture in Boy Scouts too. We were playing in the gym, and another scout fell on me, slamming my head into the hardwood floor.
Probably explains a whole lot, if you think about it.
Hoo boy. I knew this one was coming based on that thread in the forums, but I was wondering how it would be revealed.
Nice to see Reade’s violent streak goes all the way back.
Here ya go:
Melaredblu is referring to a discussion thread on the Webcomic Underdogs site. I knew Reade was trans way back when, but I had some questions about whether or not she looked too much like another webcomic character. The Underdogs had their usual helpful, friendly, and professional thoughts on the subject. You can see how awesome they are.
If you go back to Reade’s original appearance, you’ll see a few clues here and there.
I love the reveal, Charlie! And so heartbreaking. Weird how we posted emotionally rendering pages on the same day…
GEEZ NELSON YOU’RE SUCH A MEAN NOODLE!
Keep in mind that Nelson was a teenage boy talking to one of his best friends. Of course he’d be insulting. In his mind he was just being honest.
Two things that weren’t in his mind were tact and sensitivity.
And, for those of you who haven’t stepped aboard the Vatican Assassins train, you really should. Mj just slapped one of her main characters in the face with the Icy Cold Fish of Realization.
Well dip me in batter…
Nicely done Charlie that was one helluva a curve ball.
And as to the comparison…no I didn’t/don’t think that Reade and Claire are alike, except for red hair and both being well written characters.
The first thing that struck me when I read that was hitting the word “transgendered” and thinking ooh, he’s gonna take a beating…
But really, Claire? It wouldn’t have occurred to me at all, at all at all.
(Well… maybe if the strip were in color. But even then.)
And now Nelson’s emphasis on the word “girl” in the first panel makes sense…
melaredblu-I thought of you when I wrote that last panel.
“Skull fracture?” Oh, she’s gonna love this!
Methinks you might know me a little too well.
Love the time transition in panels 1 to 3. Nicely handled.
Reading this reminded me that I was wondering about Reade at her first appearance – her shoulders were just so broad. Then I just got used to them.
Thank you. I love the Reade strips. There’s so much freedom to get creative and really expand the boundaries of what comics can do.
And the shoulders (and hips) are deliberate. If you read the Underdog thread, I mentioned how I was going to emphasize that.
One of the ways you can tell a male skeleton from a female is that the shoulders are wider than the hips.
I can’t tell you how much it means to me that you picked up on that.
Nelson is wrong – Reade makes a lovely girl.
Wat’ll you see her with her glasses off…
