Yowch. Reade Turner doesn’t pull any punches, does she?
But what’s the plan? And will Edison stick to it, or sabotage it? Ah, we’ll see!
I apologize for the tardiness of today’s strip. And I want you to know that we may be on a somewhat erratic schedule for the next couple of weeks. Our local theatre is doing “The Taming of the Shrew,” and I’m going to play Tranio. So, what with rehearsals, I really don’t have as much time as I’d like to do Groovy, Kinda. But I’ll do my best, and I’ll post some pictures when we get them!
Speaking of cool stuff, Betty, the wonderful artist behind “ M9 Girls,” drew this wonderful pin-up of Any. Rulo, the creator of M9 Girls, and I thought you’d get a kick out of it.
So we get the exclusive premier!
That went…really badly. I mean, yeah, she needed to hear some harsh truths, but…wow. I don’t think that could have ended much worse than it did. I like Reade, but pushing somebody who’s unstable that far won’t help. Then again, the enabling Edison’s been getting on the other extreme is bad too. She really needs someone in her life who can balance things if she stands a chance at recovering. I’m really worried about her…
Well, who knows? Reade may have given her a wake-up call.
Of course, she’d have to remember the call, and be willing to do something about it. But maybe some good will come out of this.
At least Reade got to share her feelings.
Oof! What sort of past do these two have together?! I am dying to know! Though I hope they can keep their plan together through all this animosity. This is just some great writing here, Charlie. Less skilled writers would have taken it easy on Edison, but you are really letting Reade let her have it! “Drinks don’t have friends…”that line really chilled me, and you can just see how angry Reade is! Wonderfully evocative.
I don’t think Reade and Edison have any real past; this is just Reade dumping her anger at her ex (also an alcoholic) on the drunk she’s with, which happens to be Edison…
Exactly. Reade knows Edison, but they don’t have a past together.
Reade would’ve stayed out of Edison’s way.
Reade is really lashing out. She must care a lot about Larry. I think this is going to be a very volatile party with all the feuds going on.
At least Robbie might get some food.
Poor Edison, but I agree with Mela that she needs a hard shock.
what can I say about the “guest” art? I love Any, now we know how much she loves science!
Kudos to Betty on this playful art… And yes, we thought to make it an exclusive premiere at the GK site, since we love this comic and its readers!
Yes, kudos to Betty! She does such nice work. It’s a treat to see her on the M9 Girls-you have a knack for picking wonderful artists, Hippo.
And you noticed that some of Reade’s anger is coming from her friendship with Larry. Reade isn’t just venting her feelings-though that’s about 80% of it. She’s worried about Larry. She couldn’t care less about Edison, but she doesn’t want to see Larry or Stephanie hurt.
Frames 4 & 5: angry to hurt. Really great, Charlie. Wonder though if the anger will come back, Edison does need it. I guess otherwise she’ll continue to be another “victim”. Enjoy your time with the Bard.
Edison was angry at first. But the last thing she would do is give Reade the satisfaction of seeing her cry.
And she’s not just crying because of the hurtful things Reade said. She’s also crying because she knows Reade is right.
Wow, at first Reade was just changing the subject to avoid sharing about her and Nelson’s original relationship, but she really let poor Edison have it!
I’d say at this point Edison is justified in writing Reade off for the evening…
That was supposed to say “…at first I THOUGHT Reade was just…”
I’ll be honest, I really don’t like Reade. Not at all.
I will admit, though, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen the expression “gloriosky!” anywhere, although I heard it plenty growing up. 🙂
I don’t think these two will mingle much at the party. IF the plan works, of course.
Well, that’s a cruel comment, especially generalized to anyone who’s ever had an alcohol problem (or other addiction). She’s definitely in the wrong here.
Reade is in an unforgiving mode. In a way this is her way to cope… Again, I sympathise with Edison, but still maintain this rough treatment is what she needs to accept her problem.
Reade’s been hurt. Her family’s been hurt. She’s been used. She’s spent time with a loved one in rehab. She’s gone to the meetings and heard alcoholics laughing about the damage they’ve done. She’s gone to Al-Anon meetings and heard from the family members.
That, by the way, is where that line comes from. That’s where I heard it.
It makes perfect sense from a character standpoint. I’ve met people like Reade who generalize their personal experiences to everyone else and judge them badly for it. I can understand where they’re coming from, but it’s hard to sympathize with what they’re saying when it’s coming down from their high horse.
Love Robespierre hanging on to Edison’s neck and necklace, and Stephanie reacting to Robie’s upset. It’s details like those, Charlie, that seperate the Master from the Journeyman. ^^
I was afraid that having him hold on for dear life would diminish the emotional impact of that panel. On the other hand (or tentacle), I couldn’t have the Li’l Stinker fall off!
I have to admit that Edison’s alcoholism has driven me away from this strip a few times. What keeps me coming back is the other characters and Charlie’s storytelling.
That being said, this is chewing on my soul.
Hey, John, I’m sorry about that. I guess it was inevitable that these two would get together, and something like this would happen.
Thanks for sticking around, and I promise it’s going to lighten up very soon.
Looking forward to it!
In the last strip Edison was at three drunk bubbles. In this one none. An indication that she’s had a sobering experience? (On the assumption that this strip is not long after the last one in strip time.)
Yikes! Nope, artist’s mistake. Thanks for catching that! I’ll fix it after rehearsal tonight. Sorry about that.
She should be at 3 bubbles.
UPDATE: Fixed.
