So, today’s strip is an example of the trope known as “Chekhov’s Gun.” As Anton Chekhov once said: “If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If it’s not going to be fired, it shouldn’t be hanging there.”

If you put Robespierre in a panel with a plate of cookies, well, by the end of the strip he’s going to end up on that plate eating those cookies. At least some things are predictable.
