Staring at crosshatch and other tone work:
I never consciously noticed the discombobulatiotron has squiggley hatches like burl grain, but it’s always been there and it looks right, so I must have noticed subconsciously.
And VVictoria’s dress is interesting. I can’t blow it up enough on my phone without it going fuzzy, but it looks like a dense crossword puzzle grid, or maybe a QR code.
I *like* looking at details!
Good eye, Pops! Yeah, the discombobulationotron doorway is just my pathetic attempt at wood grain. I think I’ll have a better one in the future (spoiler alert-I’m working on it today).
I was originally gonna draw a pattern on Victoria’s dress, but decided to download a Victorian pattern. I think I made it too small.

I learned about wood grain — mostly veneer, but some solid wood — when dealing with doors and panelling for an upscale office design. What you see depends in part on the kind of tree, in part on how you slice it. The wild, swirly grain is from where multiple large branches form a crotch, or from the very base of the tree where the roots come in and jumble up the grain. Very expensive, but that means little to Sampson Enterprises, I’m sure.
